Our Lady of Guadalupe School (OLGS) has been teaching the next generation of leaders in South Chicago and other nearby neighborhoods since 1947. The school serves over 200 Kindergarten through 8th grade pupils in a community that has historically high rates of poverty. OLGS not only prepares its students for ongoing education in high school and college; it instills values that stress family, community, and life-long learning.

Education has long been seen as a way to gain upward social mobility for everyone, which makes access to high quality education even more imperative. Schools in high poverty communities are often more likely to have fewer resources, struggle to attract highly qualified teachers, and struggle to meet all of their student’s needs in the same way that more affluent schools can.

With the ability to challenge students to become responsible and independent learners and to provide more individualized attention, OLGS’s experienced, dedicated teachers can partner with parents to give learners the high-quality education that they might not otherwise be able to access in their neighborhoods.

OLGS prioritizes the needs of their students beyond just academics. The staff makes sure that students have a safe place to go before and after school hours, starting as early as 7 am, when their caregivers may not be home. The school even has their own bus, which transports roughly 60 kids daily, to make sure students are safe while arriving to and leaving school. Pupils can work on schoolwork in supervised classrooms or in one of the school’s two computer labs in the early morning hours. OLGS also offers a peer-tutoring program during the before-school hours.

The school also offers a variety of after-school programs for students. These include a popular science club (in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago), tutoring for students who need extra help, and the Ballet Folklórico club, a chance to explore Mexican arts and culture. OLGS also offers some team sports, including cross country, soccer, and volleyball.
