Our Lady of Guadalupe School (OLGS) has been teaching the next generation of leaders in South Chicago and the surrounding area since 1947. With an enrollment of just over 160, the school serves Kindergarten through 8th grade students in a community with high rates of poverty and violent crime. OLGS not only prepares its students for ongoing education in high school and college; it instills values that stress family, community, and life-long learning.

With the ability to challenge students to become responsible and independent learners and to provide more individualized attention, OLGS’s experienced, dedicated teachers partner with parents to give learners the high-quality education that they might not otherwise be able to access in their neighborhoods. In order to make this possible, the school offers significant tuition assistance to many families. And in an area where the average annual income for families is $18,000, the need for this financial assistance is great.

OLGS prioritizes the needs of their students beyond academics. The staff makes sure that students have a safe place to go before and after school hours, starting as early as 7 a.m., when their caregivers may not be home. Pupils can work on schoolwork in supervised classrooms or in one of the school’s two computer labs in the early morning hours. OLGS also offers a peer-tutoring program during the before-school hours and provides every student with a warm breakfast.

The school also offers a variety of after-school programs for students. These include a popular science club (in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago), tutoring for students who need extra help, and the Ballet Folklórico club, a chance to explore Mexican arts and culture. And with the revitalization of the school gymnasium, OLGS hopes to offer team sports again, including cross-country, soccer, and volleyball.
